Background
This client predominantly operated using one brand of conveyor scrapers throughout their site. On the odd occasion they would test a different brand and style of the scraper in the hope that they could:
- Improve cleaning efficiency.
- Reduce capital cost.
- Reduce spares costs.
- Reduce maintenance requirements and costs.
Upon testing a few options, the client found the alternatives were not viable and they continued to prematurely fail.
The challenge
This client only conducts planned shutdowns three times a year and therefore the conveyor accessory needed to be able to last this duration without requiring any major attention, repairs or blade changes.
They told us they were searching for new conveyor scrapers that could operate for at least 4 months at optimum efficiency (that’s about 4 additional weeks between typical shutdowns schedules).
The solution
Based on our experience with other sites and similar challenges, we recommended the installation of our standard series StarClean primary and secondary tungsten blade scrapers.
The result
Our scrapers lasted on site for just over eight months of operation on one set of blades.
During this time, scrapers were simply inspected, cleaned and adjusted during one of the planned shuts. They were also ‘tuned’ a couple of times – a process that takes a couple of minutes and can be done while the conveyor is running. This is done to compensate for the blade wear.
With little intervention and relatively high and consistent cleaning efficiency, the scrapers proved to be essentially maintenance and worry-free. The cost savings presented to the client were very significant.
